The Black Hills offer many unique activities for families and children of all ages. Here are my top picks on the best things to do in the Black Hills with kids. We’ve been to the Black HIlls multiple times and ALWAYS have a good time!
1. Mount Rushmore National Memorial (Keystone)
The most iconic sight in the Black Hills is Mt Rushmore National Memorial. This enormous sculpture of four former presidents carved into the mountain offers stunning views and amazing photo opportunities.
The kids will love learning about American history. They will especially enjoy walking along the Avenue of Flags to find their home state’s flag.
Stop by the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center to get park information, watch the park film, and view the museum exhibits. This will give you a good background on the history of the monument and how they constructed it. For even more information, check out the Sculptor’s Studio.
Kids can pick up a free booklet to become a Junior Ranger at the visitor center.
The Presidential Trail offers a 1/2 mile walk around Mt Rushmore National Memorial’s grounds with close-up views of the monument. For more hiking, take the one-mile Blackberry Trail through the Black Hills National Forest.
Don’t forget to treat yourself to some ice cream while you’re here! They even serve Thomas Jefferson’s own vanilla ice cream recipe!
Make sure to stay after dark for the 45-minute-long Evening Lighting Ceremony. This includes a ranger talk and a short patriotic movie. Seeing the monument all lit up at night was one of my kids’ favorite parts of the whole trip!
2. Custer State Park
Custer State Park‘s 71,000 acres are home to some of the most picturesque scenery in the Black Hills. Stop in at the Visitor Center to pick up a map and enjoy a fun-filled day in the park.
Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake is a beautiful destination. Visitors can enjoy swimming at the beach, renting a non-motorized boat to enjoy the water, fishing, and hiking while taking in all of this natural beauty.
The 1-mile loop trail around Sylvan Lake is worth exploring for great views of the lake. For a longer hike in the area, add on the 2.8-mile Sunday Gulch Trail loop. The trail features large boulders and granite walls.
Wildlife Loop Road
Wildlife Loop Road is an 18-mile scenic drive that takes you through the heart of the park. This popular route offers visitors the chance to see some incredible wildlife in their natural habitat. Bison, white-tailed deer, mule deer, and elk are commonly seen from this road, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
Iron Mountain Road
Iron Mountain Road is a 17-mile stretch of road that connects Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore. This road is the epitome of taking the scenic route. The road has some unique features including three tunnels and “Pigtail Bridges”.
Needles Highway
The Needles Highway is a 14-mile stretch of road that winds through some of South Dakota’s most breathtaking scenery, featuring sharp mountain peaks and lush meadows. One of the highlights of the drive is the Needles Eye Tunnel.
Also, check out the incredible 1.6-mile Cathedral Spires Trail. Parking at the trailhead is very limited. Get an early start if you want to do this one.
Other Hiking Trails

3. Mammoth Site (Hot Springs)
The Mammoth Site is a unique archaeological site that offers an amazing look into the prehistoric life that once lived in this area. The site is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of mammoth fossils and provides visitors with a great opportunity to learn about these ancient creatures.
Visitors can explore the museum and get up close to real bones. There are also interactive exhibits and activities for kids that make this educational experience even more fun!
4. 1880 Train (Hill City)
The 1880 Train in Hill City is an experience that the whole family can enjoy! This historic steam train takes passengers on an exciting ride through the beautiful Black Hills.
As you chug along the track, the kids will love learning about locomotives from days gone by while taking in all of the Black Hills beauty.
If you would like to learn even more about trains after your ride, the South Dakota State Railroad Museum located next door is worth a visit.
5. Rushmore Tramway Adventures (Keystone)
Rushmore Tramway Adventures has a bunch of exciting rides and attractions that the whole family will love! Kids and adults can have a blast on the Alpine Slide or Tubing Hill.
For some thrills, zip through the air or take a leap off the Jump Tower. Don’t miss the scenic chairlift rides for amazing views. Get tickets for each ride or go for a combo ticket to enjoy it all!
6. Jewel Cave National Monument (Custer)
The main attraction of Jewel Cave is of course the cave. There are up to 4 tours offered depending on the season, 3 of those being family-friendly. It is highly recommended to purchase tour tickets in advance via Recreation.gov.
The Scenic Tour is a 1/2 mile long loop that involves 734 stairs and lasts about 1.5 hours. This tour is popular and takes you through some impressive features of the cave. We really enjoyed taking this tour!
For a short tour, sign up for the Discovery Tour. This 20-minute tour gives you a brief introduction to the cave. An elevator is used to enter and exit for both of these tours.
For an adventure with kids ages 8 and up, go on the Historic Lantern Tour. This strenuous tour lasts almost 2 hours and is about 1/2 mile long. It takes you into the cave through the historic entrance and the path is lit only by the lantern in your hand.
In addition to the cave tours, there are other sights to see above ground. The Visitor Center offers a cave film as well as interactive exhibits. Kids can also earn a Junior Ranger badge here in addition to a Junior Cave Scientist badge.
There are a few hiking trail options to choose from as well. The easy 1/4 mile loop Roof Trail is a great one for kids to see the surrounding vegetation and wildlife. The longer 3.5-mile Canyons Trail loops through an open meadow.
7. Wind Cave National Park (Hot Springs)
2024 Update: Wind Cave tours have been suspended due to elevator repairs. Check the NPS website for the latest information.
Don’t miss out on Wind Cave National Park, one of two national parks in South Dakota, when visiting the Black Hills. It offers a variety of outdoor activities both above ground and below!
Below Ground
Cave tours are offered on a variable schedule throughout the year. The three most commonly offered tours are the Natural Entrance Tour, the Fairgrounds Tour, and the Garden of Eden Tour.
The Natural Entrance Tour is about 2/3 of a mile long and lasts a little over an hour. The highlights of this tour are learning the history of the cave and seeing the boxworks.
The Fairgrounds Tour is about 2/3 of a mile long and lasts 1.5 hours. This tour explores the upper and middle levels of the cave. This is considered a strenuous tour.
The Garden of Eden Tour is only 1/3 of a mile long and lasts about an hour. This is the least strenuous tour and takes the least amount of time. It uses an elevator to enter and exit the cave.
It is recommended to purchase tour tickets in advance. However, a certain number of same-day tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
Above Ground
Wildlife viewing is a popular activity in the park. Bison herds, prairie dogs, burrowing owls, and elk are commonly seen.
Hiking is another popular activity in the park. This destination has something to offer all skill levels, whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll along the Prairie Vista Trail or a strenuous hike that will really test your endurance.

8. National Presidential Wax Museum (Keystone)
The National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone is a great place for kids (and adults) to learn about the history of the United States. Not only will you get to see life-like wax figures of all of our past presidents, but also listen to stories that help bring these historical figures to life.
Tours are self-guided and are enhanced by a listening device that plays audio tracks about the presidents. Kids can also take part in a 20-question scavenger hunt to receive a prize button at the end.
9. Crazy Horse Memorial
This massive mountain carving that pays tribute to Native Americans continues to be a work in progress. In addition to the Crazy Horse monument, there is also a museum to help you learn more about the Native American culture and history while touring this unique memorial site.
10. Rush Mountain Adventure Park (Keystone)
The Rush Mountain Adventure Park is an exciting destination for kids and families visiting the Black Hills. They offer cave tours of Rushmore Cave, an obstacle course, a mountain coaster, a zip ride, and more.
There is also an arcade, Sprockets, that would be great for a rainy day. You can purchase tickets for individual attractions or a combo ticket.
11. Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway
Spearfish Canyon is a picturesque canyon featuring towering rock walls and lush forests. The Byway runs from Cheyenne Crossing in the south to Spearfish in the north along Highway 14A. There are plenty of scenic lookouts where you can take in the breathtaking views that this region has to offer.
The Spearfish Canyon Nature Area includes the Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls. The easily accessible 60-foot Bridal Veil Falls is another highlight along the byway.
12. DC Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery (Spearfish)
The DC Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery is a great place to take the family for an educational and fun experience. This hatchery offers visitors a chance to learn about fish conservation and its history!
During your visit, you can explore the museum and the unique railcar exhibit that explains how fish were transported around the country. Afterward, you can take a walk around the grounds where you’ll have an opportunity to observe brown and rainbow trout up close and feed them!
13. Big Thunder Gold Mine (Keystone)
The Big Thunder Gold Mine is an authentic gold mine that operated from 1892 to 1914. Visitors can take part in guided tours of the mine and learn all about how gold was mined from this area during its heyday.
Kids will love sifting through piles of dirt looking for something special – it’s like a treasure hunt every time!
14. Black Hills Institute of Geological Research (Hill City)

One of the most popular exhibits tells the story of Carrie Ingalls Swanzey, a sister of the author Laura Ingalls Wilder, that lived in the area for many years.

20. Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center (Lead)
The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center is a great stop for the family. This center explains the history of mining in the Homestake Mine, the city of Lead, and the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Best of all, admission is free!
21. Black Hills Mining Museum (Lead)
The Black Hills Mining Museum offers a look into the history of mining in the region and features interactive exhibits that highlight what life was like during this era.
Visitors can go on a one-hour tour of a recreated gold mine to learn about mining from the past and present. For a deeper understanding of the region’s mining legacy, visit the museum. One of the highlights for kids is learning how to pan for gold.

24. Devils Tower National Monument

The striking 867-foot-tall monolith has long been sacred to Native Americans. Visitors can explore its many trails or take part in ranger programs such as night sky viewing or guided hikes around the base of Devils Tower.
The Tower Trail is a must while in the park. The trail is a 1.3-mile paved loop that takes you all the way around the Tower. If you want to add on some more hiking during your visit, there are plenty of other trails to choose from.

Rapid City is located just outside of the Black Hills and is a great family destination. There are too many great attractions to list here. But, some of the highlights include the Reptile Gardens, Bear Country USA, Storybook Island, Old MacDonald’s Farm, Dinosaur Park, City of Presidents Walk, Main Street Square, and WaTiki Indoor Waterpark.
