Inexpensive Weekend Getaways in Florida
Florida is an incredible destination for any type of traveler. While it is known for its party beaches and famous theme parks, there is a lot more to see. From historic towns, natural springs, and charming countryside, there are so many cheap weekend getaways in the Sunshine State!
It can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. That’s why I have put together fifteen great places to visit in Florida for an unforgettable weekend getaway!
1. Pensacola
Pensacola is one of the oldest cities in Florida and a great place for a weekend getaway. It is located in the northwestern part of the state. Pensacola has plenty of sunny beaches perfect for swimming or sunbathing. One of my favorite activities to do in Pensacola is to go by Fort Pickens for a fun excursion that includes exploring old historic sites.
2. Sarasota
Sarasota is a great destination if you are looking for a fun and affordable weekend getaway. Located on the central west coast of Florida, about a 3-hour drive from Miami, Sarasota is filled with stunning beaches and vibrant culture.
If you want a more relaxing beach experience, you will enjoy coming to Sarasota. From swimming in the warm waters of Siesta Key to exploring the artsy downtown district, there is a lot to see and enjoy!
3. Key Largo
Key Largo is an ideal location for a weekend getaway just one hour away from Miami! It is a really small beach town, but ideal if you are just looking to have a beach break.
If you are traveling to Miami you can go for a few nights and enjoy visiting a new place. I recommend stopping by the Coral Reef State Park or visiting some of its iconic beaches. Finish the trip by trying the iconic key lime pie.
4. St. Augustine

If you want to visit a more historical place, St. Augustine is the best place to see. It is known to be the oldest city in the US, so there is a lot to explore. Aside from so much historical sightseeing, you can also enjoy the town and beaches.
St. Augustine is home to one of the best beaches in Florida. One of my favorite things to do is enjoy the sunset cruise while I sip some wine and see the charming town.
5. Miami

Miami is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. There are so many things to do. Whether you are looking for some of the best beaches in Florida, world-class hotels, or nightlife, Miami is a vibrant city and a perfect destination if you want to experience a little bit of everything.
This is also one of my favorite places to travel with a group. You can always rent or stay at a hotel near the beach and it is such a convenient distance.
My only recommendation would be to rent a car. Miami does not have a good public transportation system and it can be challenging to walk. Of course, you can always Uber, but it will be more expensive.
Planning a trip to Miami on a budget is possible if you know the best free and inexpensive things to do, where to stay, and great places to eat that won’t break the bank.
6. Naples
Naples, Florida is one of the most stunning places to visit for a weekend getaway. It is located only 2 hours from Miami.
Naples is a cute small beach town. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle. If you are just looking to enjoy a little bit of the Florida beaches, this is a good and budget-friendly getaway.
7. Marco Island

Marco Island is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway! Located in Southwest Florida, this barrier island is a great spot to relax and enjoy some fun activities in the sun. A lot of people have said Marco Island has the prettiest beaches next to St. Augustine.
What I love about Marco Island is its proximity to Miami. If you are planning a getaway, flying into Miami will be easy and you will be able to reach your destination in less than two hours.
There are a lot of Airbnb and VRBO options available to rent that are near the beach and even have a pool! The prices are less expensive compared to other options like Miami or Orlando.
8. Gennie Springs
If you want to have a fun weekend getaway with a little bit more outdoors and natural springs, Gennie Springs are the perfect getaway! You can stay overnight by camping, so you will need your camping gear or rent one of their cabins.
During the day, have fun diving in the springs! At night you can have fun barbecuing and building a bonfire.
This is such a fun activity to do with friends, and definitely the most inexpensive vacation I have had in Florida. You can also enjoy a nice romantic time camping under the stars! This will be a lot of fun for everyone in your group.
Getting to Gennie Springs is a bit farther if you are coming from Miami. It is about a 5-hour drive. If you are driving from Orlando or Tampa, you can reach it in around 3 hours.
9. Crystal River
Crystal River is a hidden gem in Florida. Located in the north of the state, just two and a half hours from Orlando, it is an oasis of natural beauty. With its crystal-clear springs, wildlife-watching opportunities, and unspoiled landscapes, it provides a unique opportunity for those looking to experience nature up close and personal.
10. Ft. Lauderdale
Ft. Lauderdale is one of the most vibrant and bustling cities in Florida, and its ideal location makes it a great destination for an exciting weekend getaway. Whether you’re looking to soak up some sun on the beach or explore lively neighborhoods, Ft. Lauderdale has something for everyone. Just like Miami, Ft. Lauderdale has a lot of nightlife and fun activities.
This is a great location if you don’t want to be in Miami but nearby. The best part- there is an airport. You can fly in and out and not have to drive a long way. If you also want to explore Miami, it is only a 45-minute drive.
11. Tampa
Tampa is great if you are looking to have some amusement park fun but do not necessarily care about going to Disney or spending a lot of money on theme parks. Tampa has Bush Gardens which is a great amusement park for adults, not so much kid friendly.
There are also a lot of awesome outlets if you feel like shopping a bit and there is a small amount of nightlife if you want to spend a great night at some bars or have a nice dinner. When looking for a fun and budget-friendly getaway, Tampa is always a good choice.
12. Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island is a perfect destination for an inexpensive weekend getaway in Florida! It’s located off the coast, about three hours from Miami. It has really stunning beaches and a calm atmosphere. The waters of Sanibel Island are crystal clear and blue.
It is ideal if you want to experience some fun activities like snorkeling, swimming, or jet skiing. The place itself is small, so there won’t be an abundance of nightlife such as Miami, Orlando, or Tampa.
13. Key West

Key West is an incredibly unique destination for a weekend getaway in Florida. It is rather far if you are coming from up north, but if you are driving from Miami it will take you around 3 and a half hours.
Key West is a really fun destination. It has a great town where you can walk around and enjoy the famous key lime pies.
For some fun day activities, you can rent catamarans and enjoy some jet skis, parasailing, and snorkeling. This is a fun getaway if you are looking to do some fun water activities!
14. Daytona Beach

If you are going to the east coast of central Florida, consider stopping in Daytona Beach for a great and inexpensive weekend getaway. Aside from beaches, there is actually a lot to do in Daytona! It is a big city with many museums, a few amusement parks, and even a speedway.
If you want a combination of beaches and a fun city that is not as crowded and expensive as Miami, try visiting Daytona.
15. St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is an incredible destination for a weekend getaway in Florida. Located on the west coast of the state, it offers visitors a unique combination of beaches, culture, and cuisine. There’s something to do for every type of traveler, from strolling along the famous waterfront or soaking up the sun!
St. Petersburg is also known for its nature preserves and historical museums! If you want a combination of good beaches and a mix of cities with nightlife, you will enjoy St. Petersburg.
